My Self-Summary

First Druid and (now former) Chancellor of the Springtide Clan. My rank seems to be a joke upon my Jack-of-all-Trades nature. If you have a skill you're interested in, it is likely I have dabbled in it, if not mastered it. And if not, I can always learn. Don't let my age deceive you, I'm still a quick study. Interested in playing the game, but in no rush. I've not fallen through worlds before, I plan to enjoy my time before Myddvai calls me back.

Sherwood's Suite is located on the Ace & Jack level floor. He has no door, having removed it entirely. His room is always open to visitors, regardless of his being around or not. The space is mostly a large, single space with all his amenities. The only separated out room is his private bathroom, which he keeps locked.

Of note, he has a wood burning hearth with various, rudimentary cooking supplies. There are multiple, large desks with various scrolls, journals, and books strewn about. Bookshelves and storage cabinets line many of the walls. Painted artwork, tapestries, and drawings are also haphazardly about the space. He has a low, wide, and plush bed cot tucked in a far back corner. It had a curtain which can be pulled around to give some privacy, but he won't be found sleeping in it.

How interesting! I will need to explore this place much, much further. The disparity between the ranks has been told to me to be quite dramatic. I should like to see for myself, though. Words shape understanding, but experience truly creates it.

[He sips his tea in turn, enjoying the flavor himself. The light face that Kirma makes does perk a grey eyebrow on Sherwood, though.]

Not to your liking? You can set it aside if so, no need to suffer for politeness sake. Tea making is a soulful activity and I'm afraid mine tends to spoil the subtler notes of a brew, given the savory taste I have.

Well— my door is still on the hinges ( for now ) but I do leave it open. If… you were curious.

( it’s only fair to offer hospitality in return, even if his won’t be nearly so comfortable for a couple of fantasy dudes. that’s all well and good, but—

then sherwood calls out his reaction, and kirma jolts, as if he had been so subtle in his movements that noticing them would be unfathomable. immediately, sheepishly, the cup comes back up to his lips, before he can even protest audibly: ) No, it’s— fine. I’m just not used to—

( how does he put this. )

… Finer things. ( sure. okay. either way he’s going to chug the rest of the cup now because he’s not ungrateful! thank you!! )

Why, lesson one of the finer things would be... to savor them.

[He did not have to slam it back like that......]

( maybe he didn't, but... it's the natural dog instinct when panicking......

he sets the empty cup down, pressing the side of his hand to his face and keeping his expression carefully neutral; his ears twist back, though, and he is pointedly looking Over There. the stance of a man who is definitely not embarrassed at all. )

You can visit anytime. On the ninth floor— the hall with no plants.

( don't ask for a room number, he still can't read it. )

But then what will you do? Once you have your understanding of things.

[Sorry, he's absolutely asking for that room number- how is supposed to find him otherwise? Sherwood is a mantis, not a dog, he can't find someone on scent alone...]

And which room would be yours? I do supposed I'll cross the bridge of what to do with further understanding once I have it. Knowledge is revealing to purpose, after all.

( after a solid minute of fucking with his watch to try and find the answer, as if hitting random apps might magically summon the answer: )

( he just. holds his arm out for sherwood to take a gander at the thing. it's currently open to the gallery, in which every last picture is distinctly out of focus— but his door is in there, somewhere, since that's how he's gotten around this before. )

[Sherwood adjusts his glasses up his nose and looks at the screen offered over, flipping through it. He's new to all this future tech, but had been picking up on it quickly. He's adaptive and a quick study, so while he has his blind spots still, this is something he can manage. Flipping through the pictures, he finds one of the door and points to it-]

Is this it? Are you unfamiliar with the symbols they use for numbering here?

( his lips thin out into a tight line. the first question gets a shallow nod in affirmative, but the second— )

I know five and six. ( ... ) And two.

( zero of which are in his room number, ig. he keeps his arm out nonetheless, in case sherwood isn't done looking for whatever reason. wanting to keep the contents of his watch private isn't an idea in his mind at all. )

It isn't... common, where I'm from. Having to read so much. ( the stress on the word is a very deliberate one. )

You're illiterate, I see. [Oddly enough, given Sherwood could often have a heavily judgmental tone, he says this very simply and in casual understanding.]

That is also common upon Myddvai, not often prioritized. Reading and writing was seen as an upper class activity, which I've always seen as an inequitable shame. There is so much to learn and experience in reading and sharing with one's fellows through writing. Not to mention the benefits of leading a well educated population- Ohp... My apologies.

[Sherwood taps the table top twice as if getting his mind back on track with the gesture, pulling from his thoughts to be more in the moment,]

Would you like to learn? I would be honored to teach you the skills.

( even if his tone isn't anywhere near as harsh as some others have been, there's still a barely perceptible wince at the word. not much point in denying it, though. sherwood's little tangent would hardly be out of place in describing seolhwa, either; it makes kirma give a little snort of a laugh, even as his expression stays utterly humorless. )

Ah, that's—

( whatever immediate deflection comes to mind is equally immediately cut off. after a brief pause, his words turn even more stilted than usual. )

It's... a lot to offer a stranger. Lessons like that. Isn't it?

Why, yes it is! [In contrast to Kirma's hollow laugh, Sherwood's grin is broad and jovial, chuckling,]

Hahaa, so, we shall not be strangers! It will be nothing at all to offer to a friend. I had introduced myself in broad terms, but it is better said in person.

[He offers his gloved hand to shake,]

I am Sherwood. I did not yet catch your name.

( is it really so easy, to simply become “friends” like that… though kirma looks dubious, it isn’t that he’s opposed to the idea. it’s simply an unfamiliar one— but he takes sherwood’s hand without reservation. )

Kirma.

( a name for a name. that being said— )

Is that the only name you have? ( it’s not… the hardest name he’s encountered, here, but it’s also not the easiest one. 🥹 )

An utmost pleasure, Kirma. [he gives a puff of a bemused noise to be asked if it is his only name. How familiar a question, despite the distance of worlds...]

It is. A part of the Druidic Order is to shed all previously held familial ties and further titles. I am Sherwood of the Springtide Druids, nothing more and nothing less. Is Kirma all you go by?

( sherwood’s answer is direct, and makes sense; kirma’s in return is, hmm, a little more complicated. there’s a visible moment of consideration when his hand drops away, as he tries to put together the correct phrasing. )

… It’s the only name I was given.

( the lack of familial ties can be something they have in common, even if the reasons are different— well. it sounds as though they’re different, anyway. )

Was yours chosen, or— ? ( now he’s just curious. )

Chosen... well, in a way it was. I was given a name by my parents and family, but I left it behind it my youth. A god told me she remembered my true name and that it was Sherwood.

[He takes a sip of his tea, as if lost a bit on that memory for a moment,]

I took her word for it.

( huh. there’s a few things to unpack here, isn’t there. parents left behind, speaking to gods— both of those things promise stories, but also don’t sound too out of place as far as kirma’s understanding of the world goes. the last detail, though: )

What makes a name truer than any other?

You know what's funny about that question? I asked her Majesty that exact thing. [He laughs, whimsically recounted,]

She didn't really know! Said she just remembered it, from a world bygone, that she had once known my soul. I tried the name on and it fit. Like a broken in pair of boots or a well slept upon bed mat. I've worn it ever since.

( huh. it sounds so— simple, straightforward, and… a bit nice. there’s a belonging in knowing that something is intrinisically yours, that it can follow you across lives. )

A shame she isn’t here to tell the rest of us.

( if it’s something that even applies universally. who knows. )

… How is it written? ( to circle back a topic or two. )

She would ruin this whole thing. [Said as if Sherwood is on a very personal basis with this particular god- which he is, but not in a great way.

He'll take the opportunity to move on from that conversation point, eying around his room for an inkwell and something to write on- but he doesn't really have either laid out just yet.]

My, I don't have anything fit for writing. Wait- I could show you on the device. Here.

[he pulls up his profile and points out where it lists his name. Sherwood. Other information is there, as well, his age and suit, but if Kirma cannot read then this must all be quite difficult for him to navigate]

Do you have to dictate everything you wish to say on the network to your watch? I'll be sure to call you, should I wish to get a hold of you in future.

( words! letters! they’re totally meaningless! with a finger on the table, kirma traces the shape of an S, or a vague imitation of it, based on the display. a wiggly thing, much unlike the letters he’s used to seeing. how fun. )

Ah— the watch dictates, as well.

( his turn to demonstrate something. with enough fumbling, he also manages to pull up sherwood’s profile; it’s clear the methodology he uses to do so is the result of trial and error and concentration, his eyes narrowing in focus. a couple more button presses, and:

at unquestioned. sixty-five. (his ears twitch.) cis male. any. jack of diamonds. my self-summary. first druid and now former chancellor…

… aaaand so on. kirma quickly puts his hand over the watch to muffle the text-to-speech, which isn’t ending anytime soon. he probably would’ve been better served by picking out something shorter, but— well, it’s too late now. he shrugs, as much as one can while stiffly gripping their own wrist. )

You can just do whatever is most convenient, and I’ll answer. ( an affirmation he has no problem giving to a near-stranger, apparently. )

I see- or hear, rather... may I? [Sherwood leans across the counter and reaches an arm out towards Kirma's watch. He can assess which symbol will stop the read out, though he will cradle the other man's wrist in his hand if allowed to. Easing into casual, physical contact is pretty key to Sherwood, it gives him a lot more control to have that comfort built up in time.

Also, he doesn't want to hear his whole bio read out. Hearing his age ring out in the computer voice is bad enough. No more of that...]

Why, if you're making an offer such as that, I cannot help but match it. Should you need help reading anything the machine is not equip to dictate, I am glad to help you at your beck and call.

( oh, you may. there’s no verbal assent from kirma’s side of things, but there’s certainly no resistance. just a quiet acquiescence to sherwood’s hand, arm resting against his palm, warm to the touch. warmer than an average human, though not absurdly so. kirma watches sherwood’s interaction with the screen as he cuts the text-to-speech off, doing his best to at least learn something from his assistance.

why, it’s no fun to share— and then, blessedly, silence. his arm relaxes in sherwood’s hand, a tangible display of relief at the cessation of the robotic voice. do you know how long he’s been suffering over long network posts… )

It’s mostly pictures…

( pictures in general are difficult, because guess who hasn’t figured out any of the projection capabilities, either? but he gives a half-shrug, on the left; the watchless side. )

Easiest to go see things for yourself, though. Isn’t it?

I'm a man that values experiences more than anything. Being told something is simply not good enough, I'd rather gain the knowledge myself.

[Sherwood muses, before taking another sip of his tea,]

What about you? Are you that sort of a man?

Well…

( there’s a curl of something suspiciously akin to a smile on his lips, as his gaze travels over to the pot over the fire. all unfortunate interactions with earl grey and text-to-speech aside, he hasn’t forgotten the actual thing he came by out of curiosity for— though these diversions along the way haven’t exactly been a problem, either. )

I’d say— I at least try to be, ( situations and social intricacies willing. those sorts of stipulations have become less and less important within the resort, enough so that it took a pause to recall them. ) Especially in the company of someone with much to share.
